United Launch Alliance Rockets into the New Year

On January 21, just hours after a new President was sworn in, an United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket lit up the night sky over the Space Coast of Florida lifting the Lockheed Martin built, SBIRS GEO-3 satellite into orbit. The SBIRS GEO, or Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit Satellite is the third satellite in the series of new, high priority satellites managed by the United States Air Force used to detect and track enemy missile launches.

For this launch I placed five remote, sound activated cameras around the 191ft tall rocket at Launch Complex 41. The launch was delayed one day due to a sensor issue and an aircraft wandering into the restricted airspace above the launch complex.
