2016 provided many great opportunities to photograph multiple steam locomotives across the United States. I have put together this list of my top ten favorites of the year!

Cass Scenic Railroad Shays No.2 and 5 sit at the water tower as the sky explodes with light prior to the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association’s Membership Weekend night photo session. Luckily I decided to set up the lighting a little earlier than usual and we were treated to this beautiful view!

Shay No. 4, 5 and 6 sit three wide in the Cass yard for the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park’s Fall Photography Workshop. One of my favorite things to during during the workshop is putting together the night photography session. I have been wanting to light up three locomotives side by side in the Cass yard for some time and to my knowledge, this was the first time this particular scene had been done.

An inert, Orbital ATK Solid Rocket Booster pathfinder is lifted from its railcar, rotated vertical, and moved over to a nearby stand inside the Rotation, Processing and Surge Facility (RPSF) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Note: Not a steam locomotive, but this was cool to witness, so I added it anyway.. 🙂
